Military dog tags are made to be read. A name, a number and a few other details are stamped across the metal in short lines, one under another. This tag keeps the plate and the lines, then puts lab grown diamonds where the letters would go, set in 10K solid yellow gold.

Five lines, no lettering

Each line is a row of baguettes standing upright, shoulder to shoulder, and forms one straight strip from one side of the frame to the other. There are five of them. Small round stones run in single file between each pair, the way ruled paper keeps handwriting apart. Round stones also frame the plate, and a thin thread of gold runs around within that border, following its rounded corners.

Straight-sided stones suit a straight-sided tag. The long baguettes sit square to the edges of the plate, which gives each row a clean top and bottom all the way out to the frame. Up on the bail, a short column of baguettes runs through the middle, edged with round stones, carrying the stonework toward the chain.

Why does the report say Au417 and not 10K? Testing labs often record gold by fineness, in parts per thousand. Au417 means 417 of every 1,000 parts are pure gold, and 10 parts out of 24 rounds to the same number.

Is it odd to wear a dog tag if I never served? Not with this one. It carries no name, service number or insignia, only stones, so there is nothing on it to mistake for someone's ID.

Can it be made with a name on it? The listed tag has no lettering, though most of what we make can be built to order.
