Half a millimeter does not sound like much. On a round stone, though, face area grows with the square of the width, so a stone around 3.5MM across shows roughly a third more surface than one half a millimeter smaller. Solid gold, and a clasp with two latches

The necklace itself is 10K white gold. Its lab report puts the gold content of the metal at 417 parts per thousand, which is what 10K means: 41.7 percent pure gold. The clasp carries a 10K stamp to match.

That clasp is a box type with a safety latch on each side rather than just one. Both have to be opened before it will come apart, which matters on a necklace, since one that opens by accident can slip off without you feeling it. What do the markings on the clasp mean? One gives the karat of the gold. The other is a total carat weight for the stones on that particular necklace, so it changes with the length you order.

Can a tennis necklace be shortened later? Yes. A jeweler can take out links at the clasp end. It is simpler to order the right length at the start, but it is not a dead end if you change your mind.
